Kpop Real Talk: Music Videos

Things have already begun to heat up in the world of K-pop for 2014, with the return of two amazing legends, DBSK and Rain, along with Girl’s Day. However, there are several conversational topics that continue to surface up particular dealing with music videos.  Here is the list of topics: race, culture appropriation, misrepresentation, and sexualization. From my observation these topics will to continue to be a roller coaster ride dividing Kpop fans and non-Kpop fans. A majority of those topics, we deal with on a daily basis, and can be use to analyze various types of media, regardless of what background we come from.
How does race fit in with Kpop music videos? Well, in Kpop music videos it is more accepted to see Euro
centric or Asian models being seen in Kpop music videos. Given roles to play as the love interest, or extra dancers, or whatever else role that needed to be filled. Throughout the years, international Kpop fans, especially those of color, want to see more diversity being shown in music videos. You know make their music videos more multicultural by adding other races like Blacks, Latinos, and etc. There have been times where Kpop artists included diversity into their music videos. For examples: Beast - Beautiful Night

Currently, TVXQ - Something and Rain - LA Song music video have been getting plenty of attention because of race, cultural appropriation, misrepresentation, and sexualization. You have some who are unhappy that DBSK decided to stick with the usual of putting only Euro centric or Asian models instead of adding a splash of color. Something Wrong?. Rain is also being put under the fire from his black female fandom for the sexualization visual effect of making a black woman’s breast and buttocks grow big in his music video. Now, not every Kpop fan is offended by the lack of diversity in “Something”, nor the visual effect in “LA Song”. This is where I feel the drift between Kpop fans. There is more I would like say on this matter, but my feelings are jumbled up.
However, I do have questions. Let me know your thoughts on these subjects dealing with Kpop music videos. Let me know your thoughts on these subjects dealing with Kpop music videos.

  1.     What are some examples of music videos that show women (of all types) in a positive representation?
  2.      Should each culture take back their respectful culture? ( whether it be food, dance, music, fashion, religion, etc) Why or Why not?
  3.     What kinds of changes do you want to see in Kpop music videos or music videos in general?
